Super Bowl LVlll was a battle for the San Francisco 49ers who took on the Kansas City Chiefs at Alegent Stadium in Las Vegas. Going into the game, Vegas favored the 49ers to win out, but as the past has shown, the Chiefs were far from out of it. Vegas even favored the Chiefs’ opponents in the divisional and AFC championship rounds, yet the Chiefs were able to win throughout the playoffs. Doing it twice before, Mahomes led the Chiefs to a third Superbowl victory, hoisting the Lombardi trophy after the 25-22 upset.
The Super Bowl has a huge economic impact on the state that hosts it. In 2020, when the 49ers and Chiefs first faced off in Miami, it brought in over 4,500 new jobs to the area and had a total economic impact of $571 million. Last year, in the Super Bowl the Chiefs took on the Philadelphia Eagles in Arizona. David Rousseau, the chair of the Arizona Super Bowl host committee board, announced that the economic activity in the region is up 40% from 2015. The Super Bowl brought in about $720 million for the state.
Super Bowl advertisements cost more and more each year. This year to have an advertisement in the Super Bowl, brands paid a record $7 million ($233,333 per second) for in-game spots during the Fox Sports broadcast of the Super Bowl. This cost doesn’t include the millions in production costs. Rapper Kanye West, now formally known as Ye, paid 7 million for his Super Bowl commercial, but spent $0 on production, promoting his merchandise and marking the price of everything to only $20. This generated Mr. West $19.3 million in profit while only appearing regionally on the East Coast and streamed on Paramount+.
Viewership of the NFL has grown steadily since the start of the NFL. Super Bowl 55 had the lowest viewership in recent years of the Super Bowl. It recorded only 101.6 million viewers, a significant decrease from the previous year’s 118.5 million viewers. The viewership has increased from Super Bowl 55 to Super Bowl 57 when the Chiefs took on the Eagles the total viewership jumped to 115.1 million.
With the Kansas City Chiefs winning Super Bowl 58, they have cemented themselves into a dynasty, winning three out of the last six Super Bowls joining the Pittsburg Steelers, New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, and the Dallas Cowboys.
