Prom 2024 took place on April 6th in downtown Salina at The Sullivan. This was a new venue for Southeast prom, and it was a success. The theme this year was “Let’s Get Groovy,” and it was inspired by the disco era of the 1970s. The venue was beautifully decorated with disco balls and vibrant pinks and oranges.
Prom was planned by the Junior class, led by President, Cali Augustine, and Vice President, Allison Moddelmog. A group of ten girls were excused to work the entirety of the Friday before prom to decorate and make the “groovy” vision come to life for the dance. There was a balloon arch with a sparkling paneled backdrop for the students to use as a photo backdrop, fringe streamers hanging from the ceiling, and disco balls everywhere. At night, the whole place was sparkling and shining not only thanks to the decorations, but also thanks to the colorful lighting provided by the DJ.
Promenade was also another success. Approximately 80 parents and friends of the prom-goers came to watch and support as people walked into the venue. Promenade also tied into the theme because students walked along a silver sparkly carpet. Everyone was dressed to perfection and with the majority of girls wearing long, colorful, and sparkly dresses. The popular color this year was definitely pink in all different shades and patterns.
There were lots of fun snacks such as delicious cookies provided by Amy Commerford and popsicles to help students cool down. The DJ’s music tied the dance all together. The songs that most students loved were Unwritten, Stick Season, and Starships.
After-prom was at the Alley this year, and the students loved it. Students could partake in a raffle to win prizes including gift cards to popular shopping and dining establishments, and students could even win dorm room furniture such as minifridges and microwaves. All students were provided with an unlimited play pass for the arcade, which was a greatly-appreciated change from years past. If arcade games were not preferred, students had the option to bowl with their friends, to play Black Jack at one of the many tables set up at the Alley, or to eat the pizza and snacks provided by the Alley and community members.
Prom was a fun weekend that everyone will look back on with a smile. There were lots of fun memories made from everyone’s favorite dance. Next year can’t come fast enough!
