Last spring, Cali Augustine and Bryson Lippold ran for President and Vice President of the Student Council (Stuco) for the 2024-25 school year. Their campaign included things Stuco has done in the past, along with new ideas. Stuco experienced numerous changes this year. Mrs. Ptacek has taken over sponsorship for the club, a role that was previously held by Mr. Anderson. Stuco has had a busy start to the 2024-25 school year. They started the senior parking spot tradition, held their 5th annual car wash fundraiser, and hosted their second annual Back to School Bash.
Senior parking spots are a tradition that various schools have started across the country. Southeast has wanted to start this tradition over the past few years. This was the biggest goal Cali and Bryson had for the school year. At the end of the 2023-24 school year, they sent out forms, talked to the administration, and created an outline to approve it. In July they went to a board meeting and presented their plan. At the end of the meeting, the board approved the idea with the approval of Mr. Owen. After discussing with Mr. Owen, the idea was approved as long as 30 seniors were willing to participate. After sending out the information, more than 30 seniors agreed to participate. Social media announcements brought attention to local businesses. Benjamin Moore generously donated 30 gallons of paint for the students. Painting took place on August 12th and 13th from 5:30-8:30. After the two days of painting, everyone completed their designs. Stuco hopes to continue this in the future.
The Emmanuel Church has generously allowed the Southeast of Saline Student Council to use its parking lot for the annual car wash for the past five years. This year the car wash was held on August 17th. A group of students stood on the corner of Ohio and Cloud Street, holding up posters to attract business. The rest of the students were busy washing cars at the church. Student Council raised around $1,400 from this event. This fundraiser helps pay for activities throughout the year.
Later that day, Stuco held the Back to School Bash. This is the second annual Back to School Bash. Lakeside Recreational Park allowed Stuco to use their facility. Stuco provided dinner for all the students cooked by the administration. Students played sand volleyball, went down the slides, jumped off the rope swing, and ate. Stuco also held the first Class Olympics competition which included a sand volleyball tournament and a belly flop contest. The freshman finished 4th, the sophomores finished 3rd, the seniors finished 2nd, and the juniors got 1st. After this, the belly flop contest commenced. Each grade got three jumps and was judged on a 1-10 scale. The seniors came in 1st, the freshmen got 2nd, the sophomores got 3rd, and the juniors placed 4th. This concluded the event.
Student Council had a busy start to the school year with these three events—all of which are planned to continue in the future. After these events, Stuco quickly sprung into action with Homecoming planning. September 30th – October 4th is homecoming week. There are many events and activities planned for the students and community this upcoming week.
