On Saturday, February 22nd and Sunday, February 23rd the Southeast of Saline Drama Department performed the play, The Invisible Dragon, under the direction of Mr. Terry Anderson.
The play follows the story of a fairytale kingdom read from a storybook to the audience by the storytellers (Kipra Reed and Bella Owen). In this fairytale kingdom, it is everyone’s intention to make other people happy. The King’s (Kamdyn Carbon) goal is to make all the people in his kingdom happy. The Queen (Ava Rupert) wants to appease her husband. The townspeople (Allison Moddelmog, Elizandro Figueroa, Micah Willis, and Juliana Owen) make each other happy by singing and dancing. Everyone in the kingdom is happy except for the King and Queen’s daughter, the Gloomy Princess (Kennedy Stumpf). The Princess is gloomy because she doesn’t have anyone that she wants to make happy, so she can’t be happy herself.
One day, a brave Prince (Casson Klover) rides into the kingdom hunting for a dragon, a feat he has yet to accomplish. When the Princess sees the Prince something unheard of happens, she begins to feel happy and wants nothing more than to make the Prince happy. But after the Prince discovers that the kingdom contains no dragons, he wants to leave.
Seeing how happy the Prince made their daughter, the King and Queen are desperate to get the Prince to stay. With some help from the storytellers and the stage managers (Olivia Swenson and Ezmai Rego), the King and Queen convince the Prince that there is a dragon in their kingdom. Determined to slay his first dragon, the Prince agrees to stay.
Since the dragon is not real, the Prince becomes frustrated when he can either only see the tail of the dragon or hear the dragon’s roar. Then, the Prince gets an idea. If he were to bait the dragon with a beautiful young Princess to get it out in the open, then he could slay it with ease. Willing to do anything to appease the Prince, the Princess agrees to become dragon bait.
While the Princess is waiting out in the open for the Prince to slay the dragon, the storytellers let the Prince in on their little charade. After the Prince realizes that the dragon was never real but the Princess was willing to risk her life just to make him happy, he falls in love with the Princess. After pretending to slay the imaginary dragon, the Prince and the Princess agree to get married, and everyone in the kingdom lives happily ever after.
The Invisible Dragon was specifically written for the younger elementary kids at SES, and they enjoyed the performance on Friday, February 21st during the school day. Although it was mostly for the kids, the drama department performed The Invisible Dragon for everyone on Saturday, February 22nd and Sunday, February 23rd before the opening of their second play, Faith County. Overall, the drama department worked really hard to perform The Invisible Dragon in addition to their second play, and both plays came together nicely.
