Southeast Volleyball just welcomed two new coaches, Shandi Olsen and Kara Bertrand. Coming off of last year, the girls are ready to be back and get stronger, and the coaches have the same goals. “My goals this year would be to have a successful winning season! I want every player to have learned something new and improved on a specific skill by the end of the season. I want the girls to walk away with memories that’ll last a lifetime.” Said Coach Shandi Olsen. Our coaches are excited to develop players, grow the team in skill and in chemistry, and have fun while doing it all.
Volleyball is an exciting sport to watch, but it’s even more exciting to play. Coach Kara Bertrand said, “The thrill of being on the court is unlike anything else.” Both coaches loved playing their sport, and that is one of the reasons they chose to become coaches. The two have extensive experience, not just in playing, but also in coaching. They have coached club teams, and Olsen coached Junior High last year. Each of them has roughly 25 years of volleyball experience.
Coaching is another important aspect of the sport. Good coaching helps the team improve. No matter how good you are, you can always get better. So coaching styles are important for the team to stay engaged, get better, while also having fun. When asked about her coaching style, Coach Olsen said, “I have a competitive but fun coaching style. I try to bring positive energy to practice and games. I’m always trying to find different ways to do conditioning that make it fun and different volleyball games that incorporate teamwork.” Coach Bertrand said her coaching style is “a balance of developmental, positive, motivational, structured, and competitive. I want my players to love the game, grow as athletes, and learn lessons they can take beyond the court.” Both coaches see the importance of making the sport fun. They want their players to not just play the game, but love the game.
In conclusion, we are in good hands with our new coaches. They bring energy, knowledge, and fun aspects into everyday practices. They have a true care for every player in and outside of practice, and are excited to see where the team goes. Can’t wait to see how they accomplish their goals. Go Southeast!
