At the beginning of every school year, all of the seniors look forward to one of the most exciting traditions in high school, and that is painting their Senior Parking Spots. It is not just about marking a place to park in, but it is turning a plain, grey slab of pavement into something unique and special that reflects who they are.
Every senior gets a chance to pick out their own special design, paint and spend hours creating something that is meaningful and personal to them. These parking spots become more than just a convenient place to park, but they turn into a canvas of each student’s creativity and individuality. Some choose their future career, sports, clubs, or a favorite quote, whether it’s from a book, a show that they watch, a quote from the Bible, and so much more. Senior Jacob Bircher said, “I have done track and soccer my whole life and I travel to a lot of different places for soccer on my traveling team. My favorite state that I have played in would have to be Florida or California.” Many students added bright colors and unique designs that make their spot stand out from the rest. Senior Morgan Hawbaker said, “I wanted my spot to stand out from everyone else’s, and make it somewhat involved with my future career, which is being a Firefighter.” The best part about this tradition is how much pride it gives seniors each day. Instead of pulling into a random place, they get to roll up each morning to a spot that is designated just for them. It is a daily reminder that they have made it so far and have accomplished a whole lot more than they think.
For many it also builds excitement for the future, whether it is painting your college logo, a symbol of their career, goals, or something that represents what they want to do after high school. For some students the spot is more than just a painted over parking spot, but it is like a billboard of their identity and who they are. It gives them a chance to express who they are or a side of them that some people don’t always see. In this way, senior parking spots become a way to bring the class together, and show their school spirit. By the end of the year, the painted parking lot reminds them of all that they have accomplished that is recognized by a colorful slot of creativity, friendship, individuality, and the memories that make senior year so unforgettable and everlasting.
