March 9, 2022
As the school year continues to fly by, basketball season is coming to a halt. Fortunately, the basketball season has not halted for the Trojans. The Southeast of Saline boys and girls teams finished 17-3 and secured the one seed in their respective substates brackets. Teams in the Trojans’ substate included Beloit, Council Grove, Smoky Valley, Ellsworth, Lyons, Riley County, and Minneapolis. With both Trojan teams locking up the top seed, they got the luxury of taking on the eighth seed in the first game.
On the boy’s side, Minneapolis received the eighth seed, with a record of 5-15. Two of those losses came at the hands of the Trojans earlier in the season, 52-25 and 62-22. In the first round of play, SES caught a 29-point win to advance and play Smoky Valley, the winner of the 4-5 matchup with Ellsworth. In the second round game, Southeast defeated the Smoky Valley Vikings in a very physical game. On the other side of the bracket, Beloit, Council Grove, Lyons, and Riley County battled it out. The Braves of Council Grove came out on top, creating a 1-3 seed matchup in the substate champion. In this matchup, the Trojans prevailed earning themselves a spot in the 3a State Tournament. They now play on Wednesday at 4:00 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena against Osage City.
On the girl’s side, Lyons received the eighth seed, with a record of 6-14. The Lady Trojans caught a 26-point win to advance and play Beloit, the winner of the 4-5 matchup with Council Grove. In the second round game, Southeast defeated the rival Trojans by 13. The Falcons of Riley County came out on top on the other side, after a slate of upsets. In this matchup, it was a battle all the way where the Trojans won a seven-point game. They now play on Thursday at 4:00 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena against Goodland.
