In the past few weeks, there has been a really bad storm in California. Lots of volunteers came to help out the ents people out with finding people. The flood started shortly after a big storm called the tropical storm on the 20th of August. The storm in California was the first big storm that has happened to hit the southern California coast in 84 years. The Governor of California, Gavin New some, declared a state-wide emergency in advance of the oncoming storm on the 19th of August. Rainfall broke several long-standing records with precipitation of 2.48 inches. The previous high was a measurement of 2.06 inches, set on August 17th,1977.
Los Angeles County in the town called Mount Wilson. They recorded 8.56 inches of rainfall in 48 hours to 21 August. The weather station on Mount San Jacinto of Riverside County recorded 11.74 inches during the same period. Teams of police, firefighters, and the California National Guard have responded to various incidents caused by the flooding and mudslides across riverside areas in Los Angeles, Ventura, and San Bernardino counties.
The areas around the desert resort city of Palm Springs and nearby Cathedral City in Riverside County were among the hardest hit by rainfall. Forty people were rescued from floods in Cathedral City. The floods also washed out several roads around Palm Springs, including parts of Interstate 10 which were closed for a period of time. Palm Springs City officials declared a local emergency in response to this damage. In San Diego County, firefighters responded to several calls in the area, rescuing 9 people from the riverbed in the area of the Monera Boulevard Bridge in San Diego. No injuries were reported, but the fire department said crews are still looking for more people who may need help. So far, San Bernardino volunteers have found no deaths, but are still searching in damaged areas of the city. Roughly 800 people have required assistance from emergency services due to resulting effects in the areas of Oak Glen, Forest Falls, Angelus, and Seven Oaks. Around 30 people were rescued in Seven Oaks, where the Santa Ana River overflowed.
