“We are not hating we’re just curious” I’M HATING. People are paying outrageous amounts of money on outfits for sorority rush, over thousands of dollars are being spent on one outfit. There are at least 8 days during rush week and I mean you could reuse some pieces from outfits but let’s be honest, most of the girls who post their rush day “outfit of the day” are not reusing any part of the outfit besides some of the jewelry, and half the time the most expensive part of the outfit is the jewelry itself. One girl spent over $1,400.00 on TWO RINGS. That’s a bit ridiculous in my opinion. She could have gotten the dupe of the ring for $13.00, but she felt the need to have the designer one. If you have the money for it, then go for it. If you really think about it, how many times are they really going to be wearing these outfits? They’re spending large amounts of money on ONE outfit.
Sororities are similar to jobs; they go through your social media, and if you have anything that they consider to be inappropriate on there they can basically tell you no you can’t join just because of that. Not only do they have eight days of rush, but they also have a bid day at the end of rush which is when they all go to one place and find out what sororities are bidding on them and what one they got into. The cost analysis below is a fairly standard break down of what the average sorority girl will spend:
Registration= $375
Rec. Kits= $100
1 outfit= $500-$2500
Makeup= $200
Spray tan= $40
Nails= $100
Hair= $150
Rush Bag= $150
New member fee= $4.5k
Total= 6.5k+
There are fees for living in the sorority house, and it is even more expensive if you don’t live in the house. The prices range depending upon different sororities, some are more expensive and some are a little less, but you are still looking at a pretty high number, even if you don’t live in the house. Some people don’t put a lot of thought into rushing into a sorority; they just do it because they think it looks cool, but there are a lot of things you have to do when you are in a sorority, and you don’t have very much free time. The things they have to do are a movie night, yoga session, dance class, painting class, cooking class, group volunteering, talent exchange night, and charity walks. In my opinion, you are ruining your college experience by rushing into a sorority, at least in regions in which Greek life is incredibly involved. I feel like a lot of people rush just to be able to say “ya I rushed into a sorority.” Cool, congratulations on spending money you could’ve used on better things for eight ridiculously pricey outfits. Don’t get me wrong some of the outfits are cute but I could’ve bought the same thing from Target for $20.00.
