The Sports Physiology (Sports Phys) class here at SES, will be running a 10k race on February 26th, 2024. The class has not done the race for several years, but this year they are bringing it back. Around 20 students are running the race, and many mixed emotions have been expressed approaching race day. A 10k is around 6.2 miles, and if students finish in under an hour, they will be rewarded with a t-shirt and taken out to eat burritos afterward.
One of the students participating in the race is Senior, Luke Obermeyer. When asked how he felt about the 10k he responded, “I am both nervous and excited to run the 10K. I have never run anything of this distance yet, so I am excited to see how I will feel in the run.” Luke has been preparing for the race by running a few times weekly and going to the gym.
Another student running is Junior Evan Watkins. We asked him how he was feeling about the 10k as well and he said, “I’m not nervous or excited for the 10k. I am more terrified of it because 6.2 miles is a long way, and I don’t want to die. It’s also probably going to be freezing when we run which won’t help. but the thing I am excited about is the food at the end and missing school.” Evan is hopeful to finish the race in under an hour to earn a t-shirt.
This year, the event will be called the Brrrrito Run because a community member can sponsor a runner with a Panchos burrito if they run the race and can complete the 5k. It is also named this because of the low temperatures in February!
Anyone is welcome to run as long as they are willing to provide data such as resting heart rate, heart rate recovery, VO2 max, and more for analysis by the sports physiology class. The students are testing their cardiovascular endurance and comparing their data from before the run to after it. This will help the Sports Phys. class learn more about endurance and the human body behind it.
