Goose hunting follows many of the same guidelines as duck hunting. Goose hunting isn’t as fun as duck hunting, in my opinion. There are three different types of geese that are the most hunted in Kansas: Snow Geese, Canadian Geese and Specklebelly Geese. The most hunted geese in Kansas are Canadian Geese, likely due to their high population, and they are black, gray and, white.
There is some level of dedication required for any type of waterfowl hunting. There is a lot of time and fuel spent just on driving around scouting different ponds, fields, and lakes to see where the geese are in the morning when they are on water. Then, there is the other part of scouting, which requires the hunter to follow the geese after they get off of the water and go to the field to feed. Finally, after they get off the feed later in the day, a hunter would want to follow them again to see if they go back and sit at the same water place or if they go to a different body of water.
Duck hunting is more popular in the water than geese. Goose hunting is more popular in a corn or milo field. This is due to the difference in the two birds’ diets. When setting up decoys, a hunter should set up more decoys for goose hunting because geese fly in bigger groups and feed in bigger groups than ducks. Ducks spend a lot more time on the water than geese do. Geese spend more time flying and looking for feed; geese fly in a “V” shape because it helps them conserve energy and helps them fly longer. Sometimes when an individual is hunting, there will be ducks mixed in with the geese, and it makes your hunting trip a lot better as there are more birds to shoot.
Lane Fritz and I went on a pretty good hunt Sunday December 24, 2023. We went out early Sunday morning and found a pond a couple hundred geese on it the night before and we decided to go Sunday morning to hunt and hopefully have a really successful hunt and kill quite a few geese and then we actually killed a 2 man limit of geese (12 geese) and then 10 ducks.
