Deobra Redden, 30, is being accused of battery on a protected person by threat, and intimidating a public officer. Judge Mary Kay Holthus was the one charging the convict with the battery charges. Holthus stated in court, “I think it’s time he got a taste of something else because I just can’t with that history,” when asked by Redden’s attorney for probation, prompting Redden to miraculously leap over the podium and attack the judge. We will explain what Redden was originally in court for, his assault, and the precautions he has undergone since then in his further hearings.
Redden had gone to court a few times before this day and had been on probation many times. Throughout his life, he has committed several crimes that have all led up to this day. Redden previously appeared in court with Holthus because of malicious destruction of property. This includes several misdemeanors, multiple domestic violence cases, robberies, and attempted home invasions. He also spent a year in prison because of a domestic violence case in 2021.
The incident concerning Redden attacking Judge Holthus started when his attorney asked the judge for probation rather than time behind bars. His attorney stated that Redden is getting his life back on track with a new job and plans to resume his education. Then Judge Holthus went back at him by listing off his criminal history. After that, Redden’s attorney said he believed Redden would complete probation successfully. According to ABC News, “Seconds later, Redden shouted expletives and ran toward the judge, leaping over the bench and attacking her. Redden tackled Holthus to the ground, and both disappeared from the camera’s view behind the bench, the video shows.” After the attack, Holthus experienced some injuries.
After the attack, Deobra Redden was charged with attempted murder, battery, intimidating a public officer, extortion, and disregarding the safety of a person resulting in substantial bodily harm, KVVU reported. These have been added to the previous charges Redden was in court for on the day of the attack. Ironically, Redden played into exactly what Holthus deemed him as, and very little hope stands for his future.
These were the actions that Redden took and had to face the consequences. There were many precautions taken after the attack, which would even lead to him wearing a chain mask the second time he appeared in court. Redden will now be doing 19 months to four years in prison after being charged with attempted battery and other charges.
