As the 22’-23’ basketball season crosses the halfway point, both the boys and the girls are continuing to take it one game at a time. Coming off of Christmas break, the girls suffered their first loss against a 6-1 Minneapolis team. After the tough loss, the girls bounced back by beating 4A Clay Center 45-28. While the girl’s recent games have been nail-biters, the boy’s games have been a piece of cake. Both teams headed to Sterling on three different nights in the same week to play in the Sterling Tournament. The girl’s team took their second loss to a 4A-ranked Hugoton team in the second round of the tournament, and then played Lyons Lions for a third-place victory. The boys made it to the championship, but fell short to a state-ranked 4A Hugoton boys team 47-55, for their first and only loss so far. It was a busy week for all students, but each team was more than ready to bounce back and continue to increase the winning side of their record.

Each team has spent the last two weeks getting league wins over Republic County, Ellsworth, and Sacred Heart. The boys cruised through the game against Chapman with no troubles, but the girl’s game was a different story. After trailing the Lady Irish the whole fourth quarter, Maddie Harris made a contested three-pointer with seconds left to secure the win over Chapman with a score of 43-42. Both teams beat Beloit with ease, yet again, and will travel to Minneapolis on Friday. The girls are looking for revenge against the Lady Lions, and if they secure this win, it is almost guaranteed that they will win the league title for the third year in a row. The boy’s team has already secured their league title by beating Beloit for the second time this season.

On February 27, the regular season will be over and Sub-State will begin. Until then, the goal is for both teams to go undefeated and continue to push through the season, full steam ahead.
