Punxsutawney Phil is a scam, and most of all, a tourist attraction money grab. The 140-year-old German-based tradition has been one of this country’s traditions for far too long. The tradition starts with the famously known Punxsutawney Phil, a Marmota monax groundhog who emerges from his burrow on February 2nd to predict the duration of winter. Studies show that Punxsutawney Phil has had no consistent association with seeing its shadow and the arrival of spring. The statistics linked with his accuracy generally sit around 30%-39% according to NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, showing not even a 50% accuracy rate. There is no way that the famous groundhog has any link to the decision of weather. The only reason the tradition is still on is that Phil brings an annual economic profit to the community. The Punxsutawney Phil event draws around 10,000-25,000 tourists per year. The tourists are known to bring in roughly between one million and five million dollars a year through hotels, restaurants, and souvenirs. Statistics have also shown a link in the rise in salt, shovels, and winter wear after the decision of Punxsutawney Phil. Overall, Punxsutawney Phil is unreliable. His tradition has no significant impact on the community, other than economic gain.
