When anyone asks me when my birthday is, and I respond with, “December 22,” I receive a lot of different reactions. Some say, “Oh, that’s fun that your birthday is so close to Christmas!” and others say, “That must be horrible having your birthday three days from Christmas.” Christmas birthdays have always been a topic of controversy; some people think they are great, while others consider them one of the worst birthdays. Personally, it has never bothered me having a birthday so close to Christmas! It is the only thing that I have ever known, so I couldn’t imagine having my birthday any other time of the year. Knowing how it feels to have a birthday 3 days from Christmas, I do agree that there are some pros and cons to having a Christmas birthday.
Some of the pros of having a Christmas birthday are that you rarely have school, and if you do, it is only a half day! I don’t mind having a half day of school on my birthday, because that means that I get to see my friends, but I still have most of the day to do whatever I want! Another good aspect of having a Christmas birthday is that there is a chance that it could snow on your birthday, which is always fun and pretty! Another pro of having a birthday that is so close to Christmas is that most of your extended family comes for the holidays, so you get to see some of your people that you don’t get to see often, right around your birthday! Lastly, statistics say that people born in December have a higher likelihood of living to be 100 years or older. I don’t know if this one is true, but I have a chance!
While there are multiple pros of being born close to Christmas, there are some cons, too. One of these is that everyone thinks that people put my birthday and Christmas together, but my family has always been really good at keeping them separate. Another bad part of having a birthday near Christmas is having to wait a whole year for presents. While most people get presents for Christmas and then some other time in the year for their birthday, I have to wait a whole year to get any presents at all. This can also make it harder on my parents because I can sometimes have a hard time coming up with enough things for both holidays. The last con on my list is the weather. Sometimes the weather can be pretty, like when it snows, but most of the time it is cold and gloomy. With a winter birthday, it can be hard to come up with things with my friends, since I can’t do anything outside in the cold.
December 22 can seem like a not very good birthday, or it could be seen as double the presents and more! It all depends on the way that you look at it. In my opinion, having a birthday that is so close to Christmas doesn’t bother me, and I like not having school and getting to see family I don’t always see! So, what do you think when you hear of a birthday three days before Christmas? Do you see it as a good birthday or a bad one?
