On January 16th, a girls’ basketball game between Bonner Springs High School and Eudora High School caused a controversy that has been seen by millions. Jeff Freeman was one of the referees who was working the game. Freeman is a registered official with 30 years of experience and has officiated state championships in three different sports. Freeman is a retired teacher at Jay Shideler Elementary School, where he served as principal.
According to an article by YahooSports (YahooSports), during the third quarter of the varsity basketball game, Freeman called a technical foul on one of the Bonner Springs players. This was her second technical foul, which means that she was ejected from the game. It is hard to tell what the foul was for, but I believe that it was for arguing the call for her first technical. The high school player was confused and upset at being ejected from the basketball game. As Freeman walked toward the scorers’ tables, the girl and the head coach of the Bonner Springs team came over to ask what the foul was for. As the young player tried to make her case against the ref, it seemed as though Freeman ran into the girl. Freeman made minimal to no contact with the girl, and then all of a sudden fell toward the ground. A TV broadcaster said, “I don’t want to speculate, but that looked a little more performative than what actually happened,” after the fall.
The video of this incident has gone viral on different social media platforms. Millions of people are accusing the official of flopping. After the fall, Freeman finished working the girls’ varsity game and then continued to work the boys’ game afterward. Later, after the games, Freeman said that he does not want any consequences for the girl, team, or school, and that it was not their fault. KSHSAA says that Freeman will be taking a break from refereeing and that they are still going over the incident to figure out what really happened. Jeff Freeman announced that he has a medical condition and was planning on going to the neurologist one day in the week following the games. Freeman also says, “Ask my fellow officials, coaches, athletic directors, etc., about me. My reputation is stellar.”
In my opinion, I believe that the ref flopped. I don’t think that the girl made enough contact with the ref to cause him to fall over in any way. I also think that it is interesting because Jeff Freeman is a lot bigger than the young player, so it is a little hard to believe that she would have had enough force and power to push him down to the ground and make him fall in the second that they could have possibly made contact. The final reason that I believe that this was a flop instead of a fall was that when someone faints, they almost crumble, so if he really did have a medical condition that caused him to faint, I think he would’ve fallen in a different fashion. All of these reasons together cause me to come to the conclusion that this was a flop. So what do you think? Do you think that the ref flopped, or was there a reason behind this fall?
