Changing to block schedules could lead to a higher success rate among high schoolers. By extending class periods and decreasing the number of classes you visit a day, this creates a more flexible, focused, and effective learning environment, not only for the teachers, but for students too. The longer class periods give the teachers chances to dive deeper into lessons and explore different learning techniques and discussions without having to rush because of a 50-minute time limit. The students’ daily homework load would decrease because of the time they have in class and the time they have between their classes that week. A block schedule could lead to stronger teacher-student connections. Longer class periods give teachers more time in class to help students individually based on their learning style. Some students need more help than others, and this would allow teachers to help those students. Block schedules would improve focus in students. Being a student myself, I believe that having only to juggle a few subjects a day rather than 7-8 would help students concentrate on what they are learning that day. This schedule could help prepare students for college schedules as well. College classes are often longer and fewer times a week. Sound familiar? There are lots of cons to block scheduling as well, and yes, I understand that each student’s learning abilities and preferences are different, but I strongly believe that the pros to a block schedule would create a higher success rate in high schoolers today.
