On August 30, 2023, the history of women’s sports changed. The Nebraska Huskers Volleyball team was set to play Omaha at the Memorial Stadium, and the night featured four in-state teams including the Nebraska Huskers. Nebraska-Kearney played Wayne State in an exhibition, and Nebraska played Omaha.
While playing at Memorial Stadium, all four teams were doing very well according to their records. Nebraska-Kearney was (20-1) and Wayne State was (19-1). Nebraska was (17-0) and Omaha was (8-10).
The night of August 30th set a new record in Women’s sports. 92,003 fans packed into the Husker’s football stadium, setting the overall global attendance record for women’s sports. The previous world record for women’s sports attendance was 91,648, set on April 22, 2022, in Barcelona, Spain, for a Champions League match between Barcelona and Wolfsburg.
The Memorial Stadium has a capacity of 85,458 people, but it was able to hold 92,003 people due to the volleyball court being raised up off the ground, allowing people to sit in bleachers and chairs to watch the matches.
This event took months of planning for a program and state that loves the game of volleyball, and the fans returned the favor, packing the stadium more than ever before, cheering loudly all throughout the event. After the Huskers won the first two sets, the attendance record was announced, and the stadium grew even louder as cheers rang out for their new world record.
Watching the volleyball games still came with a price, however, as ticket prices started out at twenty-five dollars for adults and five dollars for high school students and younger. Eventually, the ticket prices reached as much as four hundred dollars.
Overall, the attendance at Memorial Stadium was unlike anything done ever before. The Huskers were shown how much they were loved by the community and surrounding areas around them, creating a heartwarming and iconic night for the aspiring players.
